Photos from North Korea

I just found this fantastic set of photos from North Korea on flickr (via metafilter) and thought I’d share. As someone who has lived in (largely) free, democratic, individualistic countries all his life, it’s nigh impossible for me to imagine what it must be like growing up in a planned economy and, without political rights and in a society in which not the individual but the collective is all that matters. The pictures make the country even stranger than it looks on paper: Many of them give me the impression that the entire country is stuck in the 60s or 70s; technologically as well as aesthetically.
