The Bad Plus

Sweet! The Bad Plus, one of the bands I saw at this year’s North Sea Jazz festival have their own blog on which they write on all things modern Jazz (and occasionally classical music, electronica and anything else that influences them).

If you’ve never heard of The Bad Plus, do check them out. They made their name by deconstructing pop songs and then playing them in a jazz trio format, almost free-jazz style like so. Some German readers may in fact have heard
Flim, one of their own composition which was used as the intro to “Stromberg”, the German adaptation of “The Office”.

All three of them are fine instrumentalists and I was particularly impressed with the drummer, Dave King, who always looked like he was having seizures while drumming, but pulled off incredible drum sequences.

  1. Good stuff, I’ll put it on the list for stuff to copy when we next time meet.

  2. Oops, turns out Flim is not an original composition but an Aphex Twin cover.
